⛩️ Section IX - The Purification of Izanagi

Therefore His Augustness Izanagi said: I have come to a most unpleasant land, a horrible, unclean land. I must purify my august body. He went to the plain of Ahagi at Tachibana in Tsukushi to perform purification.

After escaping Yomi, Izanagi goes to purify himself from the pollution of death.

When he threw down his staff, belt, bag, cloak, trousers, hat, and bracelets, twelve deities were born from each item. These were deities of roads, crossroads, and passages.

Deities are born from each item of clothing Izanagi discards.

When he washed his left august eye, the Deity born was called Heaven-Illuminating-Great-Deity, Amaterasu. When he washed his right eye, the Deity born was Tsuki-Yomi. When he washed his nose, the Deity born was Susanoo.

From washing: the sun goddess Amaterasu, moon god Tsukiyomi, and storm god Susanoo are born.

Then Izanagi rejoiced greatly saying: I have had children, one after another, and now I have gotten three noble children. He gave to Amaterasu the rule of Heaven, to Tsukiyomi the rule of Night, and to Susanoo the rule of the Sea.

Izanagi divides dominion: Amaterasu rules heaven, Tsukiyomi the night, Susanoo the sea.
