⛩️ Section VIII - The Land of Yomi

Wishing to meet his younger sister Izanami again, he followed after her to the Land of Yomi. When she came forth to the door of the palace to meet him, Izanagi spoke: My lovely younger sister, the lands that I and thou made are not yet finished. Come back!

Izanagi follows Izanami to the underworld (Yomi), begging her to return.

Izanami replied: Lamentable indeed that thou camest not sooner. I have already eaten of the furnace of Yomi. Nevertheless, I will discuss with the Deities of Yomi my desire to return. Do not look upon me while I am gone.

Izanami has eaten underworld food but will try to arrange her release. She warns him not to look.

As she tarried long, he could not wait. Breaking off one of the end-teeth of the comb that was stuck in the left bunch of his hair, he lit one fire and went in to look.

Growing impatient, Izanagi lights a fire and enters to look at her.

Maggots were swarming, and she was rotting. Izanagi, seeing this, was terrified and fled back. Izanami said: Thou hast put me to shame! And she sent the Ugly Females of Yomi to pursue him.

He sees her decomposing body, flees in terror, and she sends demons to chase him.
