⛩️ Section VII - Retirement of Izanami

Shinto creation myth and early Japanese history

Verses: 3

Verses

Verse 1

Through giving birth to the Deity of Fire, her august private parts were burned, and she sickened and lay down. The names of the deities born from her vomit, her excrement, and her urine were all deities of growth and minerals.

Giving birth to the fire deity burns Izanami fatally; even in dying she creates deities.

Verse 2

So the Deity Izanami, through giving birth to the Deity of Fire, at length divinely retired. From the mourning of Izanagi came still more deities born of his tears and grief.

Izanami dies from creating fire. Izanagi weeps, creating more deities from his tears.

Verse 3

Then His Augustness Izanagi, drawing the ten-grasp sabre that was augustly girded on him, cut off the head of his child the Deity Shining-Elder. The deities born from the blood were all fierce deities of thunder.

In rage, Izanagi slays the fire deity; from the blood, thunder deities are born.
