Verse 1

大壯,利貞

dà zhuàng, lì zhēn

The Power of the Great. Perseverance furthers.

Verse 2

初九:壯于趾,征凶,有孚

chū jiǔ: zhuàng yú zhǐ, zhēng xiōng, yǒu fú

Nine at the beginning: Power in the toes. Continuing brings misfortune. This is certainly true.

Verse 3

九二:貞吉

jiǔ èr: zhēn jí

Nine in the second place: Perseverance brings good fortune.

Verse 4

九三:小人用壯,君子用罔

jiǔ sān: xiǎo rén yòng zhuàng, jūn zǐ yòng wǎng

Nine in the third place: The inferior man works through power. The superior man does not act thus. To continue is dangerous.

Verse 5

九四:貞吉悔亡,藩決不羸

jiǔ sì: zhēn jí huǐ wáng, fān jué bù léi

Nine in the fourth place: Perseverance brings good fortune. Remorse disappears. The hedge opens; there is no entanglement.

Verse 6

六五:喪羊于易,無悔

liù wǔ: sàng yáng yú yì, wú huǐ

Six in the fifth place: Loses the goat with ease. No remorse.

Verse 7

上六:羝羊觸藩,不能退,不能遂

shàng liù: dī yáng chù fān, bù néng tuì, bù néng suì

Six at the top: A goat butts against a hedge. It cannot go backward, it cannot go forward. Nothing serves to further. If one notes the difficulty, this brings good fortune.
