Retreat. Success. In what is small, perseverance furthers. - Mountain under heaven: the image of Retreat. Thus the superior man keeps the inferior man at a distance, not angrily but with reserve.

Verse 1
遯，亨，小利貞
dùn, hēng, xiǎo lì zhēn
Retreat. Success. In what is small, perseverance furthers.
Verse 2
初六：遯尾，厲，勿用有攸往
chū liù: dùn wěi, lì, wù yòng yǒu yōu wǎng
Six at the beginning: At the tail in retreat. This is dangerous. One must not wish to undertake anything.
Verse 3
六二：執之用黃牛之革
liù èr: zhí zhī yòng huáng niú zhī gé
Six in the second place: He holds him fast with yellow ox hide. No one can tear him loose.
Verse 4
九三：係遯，有疾厲
jiǔ sān: xì dùn, yǒu jí lì
Nine in the third place: A halted retreat is nerve-wracking and dangerous. To retain people as men- and maidservants brings good fortune.
Verse 5
九四：好遯，君子吉，小人否
jiǔ sì: hǎo dùn, jūn zǐ jí, xiǎo rén pǐ
Nine in the fourth place: Voluntary retreat brings good fortune to the superior man and downfall to the inferior man.
Verse 6
九五：嘉遯，貞吉
jiǔ wǔ: jiā dùn, zhēn jí
Nine in the fifth place: Friendly retreat. Perseverance brings good fortune.
Verse 7
上九：肥遯，無不利
shàng jiǔ: féi dùn, wú bù lì
Nine at the top: Cheerful retreat. Everything serves to further.
