⛩️ Section IV - Courtship of the Deities

Having descended from Heaven onto this island, they saw to the erection of a heavenly august pillar, they saw to the erection of a hall of eight fathoms. Then Izanagi asked his spouse Izanami: How is thy body formed?

Izanagi and Izanami descend to Onogoro, erect a pillar and hall, and address each other.

She replied saying: My body, formed though it be formed, has one place which is formed insufficiently. Then Izanagi said: My body, formed though it be formed, has one place which is formed to excess.

The two deities discover their complementary natures.

Therefore, I would like to take that place in my body which is formed to excess and insert it into that place in thy body which is formed insufficiently, and thus give birth to the land. How would this be?

Izanagi proposes their union to give birth to the land.

Izanami replied saying: That will be well. Then Izanagi said: Let us walk around this heavenly august pillar, and when we meet on the other side let us be united. This was agreed.

They agree to circle the heavenly pillar and unite.
