The Army. The army needs perseverance and a strong man. Good fortune without blame. - In the middle of the earth is water: the image of the Army. Thus the superior man increases his masses by generosity toward the people.

Verse 1

師,貞丈人吉,無咎

shī, zhēn zhàng rén jí, wú jiù

The Army needs perseverance and a strong man. Good fortune without blame.

Verse 2

初六:師出以律,否臧凶

chū liù: shī chū yǐ lǜ, pǐ zāng xiōng

Six at the beginning: An army must set forth in proper order. If the order is not good, misfortune threatens.

Verse 3

九二:在師中吉,無咎,王三錫命

jiǔ èr: zài shī zhōng jí, wú jiù, wáng sān xī mìng

Nine in the second place: In the midst of the army. Good fortune. No blame. The king bestows a triple decoration.

Verse 4

六三:師或輿尸,凶

liù sān: shī huò yú shī, xiōng

Six in the third place: Perchance the army carries corpses in the wagon. Misfortune.

Verse 5

六四:師左次,無咎

liù sì: shī zuǒ cì, wú jiù

Six in the fourth place: The army retreats. No blame.

Verse 6

六五:田有禽,利執言,無咎

liù wǔ: tián yǒu qín, lì zhí yán, wú jiù

Six in the fifth place: There is game in the field. It furthers one to catch it. Without blame. The eldest son leads the army.

Verse 7

上六:大君有命,開國承家

shàng liù: dà jūn yǒu mìng, kāi guó chéng jiā

Six at the top: The great prince issues commands, founds states, vests families with fiefs. Inferior people should not be employed.
