Keeping Still. Keeping his back so still that he no longer feels his body. He goes into his courtyard and does not see his people. No blame. - Mountains standing close together: the image of Keeping Still. Thus the superior man does not permit his thoughts to go beyond his situation.
Verses
Verse 1
艮其背，不獲其身
gèn qí bèi, bù huò qí shēn
Keeping Still. Keeping his back so still that he no longer feels his body. He goes into his courtyard and does not see his people. No blame.
Verse 2
初六：艮其趾，無咎，利永貞
chū liù: gèn qí zhǐ, wú jiù, lì yǒng zhēn
Six at the beginning: Keeping his toes still. No blame. Continued perseverance furthers.
Verse 3
六二：艮其腓，不拯其隨
liù èr: gèn qí féi, bù zhěng qí suí
Six in the second place: Keeping his calves still. He cannot rescue him whom he follows. His heart is not glad.
Verse 4
九三：艮其限，列其夤，厲薰心
jiǔ sān: gèn qí xiàn, liè qí yín, lì xūn xīn
Nine in the third place: Keeping his hips still. Making his sacrum stiff. Dangerous. The heart suffocates.
Verse 5
六四：艮其身，無咎
liù sì: gèn qí shēn, wú jiù
Six in the fourth place: Keeping his trunk still. No blame.
Verse 6
六五：艮其輔，言有序，悔亡
liù wǔ: gèn qí fǔ, yán yǒu xù, huǐ wáng
Six in the fifth place: Keeping his jaws still. The words have order. Remorse disappears.
Verse 7
上九：敦艮，吉
shàng jiǔ: dūn gèn, jí
Nine at the top: Noble-hearted keeping still. Good fortune.
