☯️ 損 (Sǔn) - Decrease
Decrease combined with sincerity brings about supreme good fortune without blame. One may be persevering in this. It furthers one to undertake something. How is this to be carried out? One may use two small bowls for the sacrifice. - At the foot of the mountain, the lake: the image of Decrease. Thus the superior man controls his anger and restrains his instincts.
Verses
Verse 1
損,有孚,元吉無咎
sǔn, yǒu fú, yuán jí wú jiù
Decrease combined with sincerity brings about supreme good fortune without blame.
Verse 2
初九:已事遄往,無咎,酌損之
chū jiǔ: yǐ shì chuán wǎng, wú jiù, zhuó sǔn zhī
Nine at the beginning: Going quickly when one's tasks are finished is without blame. But one must reflect on how much one may decrease others.
Verse 3
九二:利貞,征凶,弗損益之
jiǔ èr: lì zhēn, zhēng xiōng, fú sǔn yì zhī
Nine in the second place: Perseverance furthers. To undertake something brings misfortune. Without decreasing oneself, one is able to bring increase to others.
Verse 4
六三:三人行則損一人,一人行則得其友
liù sān: sān rén xíng zé sǔn yī rén, yī rén xíng zé dé qí yǒu
Six in the third place: When three people journey together, their number decreases by one. When one man journeys alone, he finds a companion.
Verse 5
六四:損其疾,使遄有喜,無咎
liù sì: sǔn qí jí, shǐ chuán yǒu xǐ, wú jiù
Six in the fourth place: If a man decreases his faults, it makes the other hasten to come and rejoice. No blame.
Verse 6
六五:或益之十朋之龜,弗克違,元吉
liù wǔ: huò yì zhī shí péng zhī guī, fú kè wéi, yuán jí
Six in the fifth place: Someone does indeed increase him. Ten pairs of tortoises cannot oppose it. Supreme good fortune.
Verse 7
上九:弗損益之,無咎,貞吉
shàng jiǔ: fú sǔn yì zhī, wú jiù, zhēn jí
Nine at the top: If one is increased without depriving others, there is no blame. Perseverance brings good fortune.
