The Taming Power of the Great. Perseverance furthers. Not eating at home brings good fortune. It furthers one to cross the great water. - Heaven within the mountain: the image of The Taming Power of the Great. Thus the superior man acquaints himself with many sayings of antiquity and many deeds of the past, in order to strengthen his character thereby.

Verse 1
大畜，利貞，不家食吉
dà chù, lì zhēn, bù jiā shí jí
The Taming Power of the Great. Perseverance furthers. Not eating at home brings good fortune. It furthers one to cross the great water.
Verse 2
初九：有厲利已
chū jiǔ: yǒu lì lì yǐ
Nine at the beginning: Danger is at hand. It furthers one to desist.
Verse 3
九二：輿說輹
jiǔ èr: yú shuō fú
Nine in the second place: The axletrees are taken from the wagon.
Verse 4
九三：良馬逐，利艱貞
jiǔ sān: liáng mǎ zhú, lì jiān zhēn
Nine in the third place: A good horse that follows others. Awareness of danger, with perseverance, furthers. Practice chariot driving and armed defense daily. It furthers one to have somewhere to go.
Verse 5
六四：童牛之牿，元吉
liù sì: tóng niú zhī gù, yuán jí
Six in the fourth place: The headboard of a young bull. Great good fortune.
Verse 6
六五：豶豕之牙，吉
liù wǔ: fén shǐ zhī yá, jí
Six in the fifth place: The tusk of a gelded boar. Good fortune.
Verse 7
上九：何天之衢，亨
shàng jiǔ: hé tiān zhī qú, hēng
Nine at the top: One attains the way of heaven. Success.
