Pushing Upward has supreme success. One must see the great man. Fear not. Departure toward the south brings good fortune. - Within the earth, wood grows: the image of Pushing Upward. Thus the superior man of devoted character heaps up small things in order to achieve something high and great.

Verse 1

升,元亨,用見大人

shēng, yuán hēng, yòng jiàn dà rén

Pushing Upward has supreme success. One must see the great man. Fear not. Departure toward the south brings good fortune.

Verse 2

初六:允升,大吉

chū liù: yǔn shēng, dà jí

Six at the beginning: Pushing upward that meets with confidence brings great good fortune.

Verse 3

九二:孚乃利用禴,無咎

jiǔ èr: fú nǎi lì yòng yuè, wú jiù

Nine in the second place: If one is sincere, it furthers one to bring even a small offering. No blame.

Verse 4

九三:升虛邑

jiǔ sān: shēng xū yì

Nine in the third place: One pushes upward into an empty city.

Verse 5

六四:王用亨于岐山,吉,無咎

liù sì: wáng yòng hēng yú qí shān, jí, wú jiù

Six in the fourth place: The king offers him Mount Ch'i. Good fortune. No blame.

六五:貞吉,升階

liù wǔ: zhēn jí, shēng jiē

Six in the fifth place: Perseverance brings good fortune. One pushes upward by steps.

上六:冥升,利于不息之貞

shàng liù: míng shēng, lì yú bù xī zhī zhēn

Six at the top: Pushing upward in darkness. It furthers one to be unremittingly persevering.
