☯️ 坎 (Kǎn) - The Abysmal

The Abysmal repeated. If you are sincere, you have success in your heart, and whatever you do succeeds. - Water flows on and reaches the goal: the image of the Abysmal repeated. Thus the superior man walks in lasting virtue and carries on the business of teaching.

Verse 1

習坎,有孚,維心亨,行有尚

xí kǎn, yǒu fú, wéi xīn hēng, xíng yǒu shàng

The Abysmal repeated. If you are sincere, you have success in your heart, and whatever you do succeeds.

Verse 2

初六:習坎,入于坎窞,凶

chū liù: xí kǎn, rù yú kǎn dàn, xiōng

Six at the beginning: Repetition of the Abysmal. In the abyss one falls into a pit. Misfortune.

Verse 3

九二:坎有險,求小得

jiǔ èr: kǎn yǒu xiǎn, qiú xiǎo dé

Nine in the second place: The abyss is dangerous. One should strive to attain small things only.

Verse 4

六三:來之坎坎,險且枕,入于坎窞

liù sān: lái zhī kǎn kǎn, xiǎn qiě zhěn, rù yú kǎn dàn

Six in the third place: Forward and backward, abyss on abyss. In danger like this, pause at first and wait. Otherwise you will fall into a pit in the abyss. Do not act this way.

六四:樽酒簋貳,用缶,納約自牖

liù sì: zūn jiǔ guǐ èr, yòng fǒu, nà yuē zì yǒu

Six in the fourth place: A jug of wine, a bowl of rice with it; earthen vessels simply handed in through the window. There is certainly no blame in this.

Verse 6

九五:坎不盈,祗既平,無咎

jiǔ wǔ: kǎn bù yíng, zhī jì píng, wú jiù

Nine in the fifth place: The abyss is not filled to overflowing, it is filled only to the rim. No blame.

Verse 7

上六:係用徽纆,寘于叢棘,三歲不得,凶

shàng liù: xì yòng huī mò, zhì yú cóng jí, sān suì bù dé, xiōng

Six at the top: Bound with cords and ropes, shut in between thorn-hedged prison walls: for three years one does not find the way. Misfortune.
